The decision to make a life-long commitment to another person is one of the most significant and transformative decisions that we make. Just as Unitarian Universalists do not have one creed or dogma, neither do we have one wedding or union ceremony that we try to fit every couple into by filling in the blanks. Our wedding and union ceremonies are created with each couple, along with encouragement and help in writing their own vows, to reflect the unique values and commitments of each relationship.
The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Mankato is committed to marriage equality. While we continue to work for civil and marriage rights for our gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgendered friends in the larger society, we are also committed to offering ceremonies of same-sex union to those couples who wish to honor their commitment to each other in a religious ceremony.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT WEDDINGS AND UNIONS
How often do we meet with the minister? Usually, there are three meetings in preparation for the actual ceremony. The meetings include a chance for the minister to get to know you better and to plan for the details of your wedding/union.
Do you perform interfaith weddings for people from two different religious traditions? Our minister has performed interfaith weddings in the past, as well as co-officiated with clergy from other faith traditions.
Do we need to be members of the congregation? No. Our minister officiates for weddings and unions for all members of the community.
Can we bring our own minister? This can be possible, but our congregation's policy is to review such requests on a case by case basis. Please speak with our minister, if you have such a request.
Do we need to have both the wedding/union and reception at the Fellowship? No. The sanctuary and/or the Fellowship Hall can be used, or our minister can perform the ceremony in another appropriate location. Please see our Building Use policy on the website for more information about the building and its capacities.
Is there a fee for having our wedding/union at the Fellowship? There is no fee for either the use of the building or ministerial services for members of the congregation. There are fees for non-members. Please contact the office for information about current fees.
