THE SOCIAL ACTION BOOK CLUB AND DISCUSSION GROUP

The Social Action Book Club is designed to get people thinking about issues and taking action as a result of their reading. We meet at 6 p.m. in the UU Fellowship, 937 Charles Ave.

As a group, we have discussed the following books:

  • What is Marriage For? by E.J. Graff
  • The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver
  • The World is Flat by Tom Friedman
  • The Middle of Everywhere: Helping Refugees Enter the American Community by Mary Pipher
  • Nickel & Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich

MAKING CONNECTIONS AT THE LINCOLN CENTER

UU members and friends are volunteering an hour or two a week helping immigrants and other adults prepare for their GED test at the Lincoln Community Center.

This is a great opportunity to see the world through new eyes as you and your family help, as well as learn, from immigrants who come from all corners of the world.

Read a first-hand connection story about the program, written by participants Kathy Vos, Greg Abbott and Ben Abbott.

If you are interested in helping with this initiative, contact Jane Schostag 345-5355. The adult classes at Lincoln continue through the summer. Both Jane and Joan Christensen are tutoring and can give you more details on how to help at the center.

ECHO FOOD SHELF

The UU Fellowship sponsors an on-going collection spot in our narthex for the Echo Food Shelf.

FREE TRADE COFFEE

This congregation purchases bulk free-trade coffee for our social events as well as for members of the congregation.

SERVING MEALS AT THE SALVATION ARMY

Members of this committee support and organize serving meals at the Salvation Army. We serve four meals a year in rotation with 10 other churches. We have been performing this service for more than 12 years.
